Battle for Wesnoth is a completely free project, created in 2003 by David White, to which more than 50 people have contributed over the years of constant development and updates. This medieval-themed turn-based strategy game is set in the imaginary land of Wesnoth.
The game was initially based on 16-bit games like Master of Monsters, Shining Force, and Warsong. Over time, though, so many game modes, units, and stories were added that its content is now boundless. The gameplay requires you to move your troops by turns along a grid scenario with different types of land and geographic features to be overcome using your best strategy.
Your army will be comprised of different types of characters, each with his or her own tricks and special skills. Depending on the campaign and as you move forward, you can level up your troops and recruit new units that you've found or rescued. But careful: all your troops will require economic support, so try to keep an eye on your rations. Still, the rules will depend on the campaign you're playing.
On top of the 15 available campaigns, the game also has a multiplayer mode that you can play on a local network as well as over LAN, making Battle for Wesnoth a very comprehensive, ever-growing strategy game that's currently considered an icon among freeware PC games.
